Renovation and Self Build

Homebuilding & Renovating’s Editorial Director Jason Orme can see the finish line in sight as his bespoke staircase began to take shape

The staircase was obviously a critical part of the new home and we wanted something ‘wow’ but also ideally ‘cheap’. Working with Ben Schuck, our builder, and Central Joinery Group, we designed a staircase in sapele that would have the spindles reaching from handrail to floor. As an added bonus, it provided a useful under-stair area.

Working with Jason and his team we created a bespoke staircase that became a centre piece for his self build. During the initial brief Jason was looking to maximise the light and installed a flush roof light that opened up the area. This amend was critical to the build an ensured that natural light could come through the hallway and allow the staircase to become the centre piece. The internal glazing also allowed a through view behind the bespoke staircase.

Jason wanted a staircase within his budget but he wanted to add the 'WOW' factor. His choice of material was sapele and he decided he wanted his balustrades to follow through to the floor. this look provided a great under-stair area which also allowed natural lighting to flow through the balustrades.
